Mission Report: 3D Scan and Data Collection
Mission 1: 3D object mapping mission
(Submitter:
Jinwook & Joel)
Weather
conditions
● Cloud Cover: Clear
● Wind Direction: NE to SW
● Wind Speed: 4 mph
● Temp: 72° F
After we checked the potential
hazards in the street view of google maps and confirmed that there we could fly
without problems, we got permission from LAANCE (Class D, 400 feet)
LAANCE APPROVAL: ALTTVJQZJU10
We made an emergency plan (if the
aircraft looks unstable, land as soon as possible).
2D mapping mission with skydio 2 +
We flew the drone Sykio 2+ with 2D
landmowing pattern and opposing grid lines over the area shown in the image
below.
The intended scan area was
constituted of 5 parking slots, the mission was originally planned to have a
camera lens angle of 90 degrees for the first pass, 80 degrees for the second
pass and a perimeter flight at 45 degrees.
However, when we set up the flight,
we ran into a problem. The Skydio platform didn’t allow us to configure
independently the camera lens angle of the first and second flight passes,
therefore, both of the opposing grid lines passes were flown with the lens
angle inclined to 80 degrees; the flight of the drone was also configured to
fly the perimeter with the lens at 45 degrees, this parameter was configured
successfully.
The altitude performed for the
flight was 100.5 ft (about 30.6 meters), this altitude was enough to clear
obstacles and still obtain high resolution pictures of the scan surface,
additionally, we made sure to overlap the pictures by 80% from the frontal and
lateral sides to get good quality images, resulting in a total of 31 pictures.
2D mapping mission with mavic 2 pro 90 degrees
We flew the drone Mavic 2 pro with
opposing gridlines over the area shown in the image
The intended scan area was
constituted of 5 parking slots, the mission was planned to have a camera lens
angle of 80 degrees for opposing gridlines pattern
The altitude performed for the
flight was 100.5 ft (about 30.6 meters), this altitude was enough to clear
obstacles and still obtain high resolution pictures of the scan surface,
additionally, we made sure to overlap the pictures by 80% overlap and sidelap
to get good quality images, resulting in a total of 9 pictures.
2D mapping mission with mavic 2 pro 80 degrees
We flew the drone Mavic 2 pro with
opposing gridlines over the area shown in the image below.
The intended scan area was
constituted of 5 parking slots, the mission was planned to have a camera lens
angle of 80 degrees for opposing gridlines pattern.

obstacles and still obtain high resolution pictures of the scan surface,
additionally, we made sure to overlap the pictures by 80% from the frontal and
lateral sides to get good quality images, resulting in a total of 8 pictures.

Car simulating an accident using 3D scan(skydio 2 +)
We didn’t have a car for this
mission so we tried to borrow a bike from our friends but we couldn’t, so we
tried to use the random car for this mission but it’s weird as well so we
finally used a shopping cart instead of a real car near Walmart for this
mission. We set 90 % for both overlap and 10.9 ft for the distance to surface
to get better quality for pictures. as a result, we got 250 images for car simulating
an accident.
Car simulating an accident using the 3D orbit scan function(mavic 2 pro)
We tried to use the 3D orbit scan
function but we were not able to do it because the space was not broad for the
scan. So, we used FREE FLIGHT and orbited the shopping cart manually.

Why we chose these areas?
Submitter:
Jinwook
The
reason why we chose the turf farm was turf farm is good for doing our first
mission, we were supposed to do mapping mission with skydio 2 + and mavic 2
pro. the wide open parking lot is good for mapping missions.
(1340 Cherry Ln, West Lafayette, IN 47907)
The
reason why we chose the walmart was we had to find another option to simulate
car accidents. we don’t have our own car, so we had to use different one and we
finally decided to use shopping cart instead of real car. we also found enough
space near walmart for the mission.

Skydio 2 +
vs Mavic 2 pro

In terms of the controllers, the
Mavic 2 controller is better than Skydio’s for us. the reason is we are still used to Mavic 2 pro so
it is still easier for us to control it. I also could feel the controller of
the Mavic 2 Pro is smoother than the Skydio 2 +
In terms of the batteries. Both of
the drones offer a good flight time, but we were able to feel the DJI Mavic 2
Pro offered a longer flight time.
In terms of the platform, even
though Skydio 2 is a smaller company than Mavic 2pro now, the platform of Skydio
looks better for us. the skydio2 + platform appeared more sturdy. we didn’t
take much time to get used to the studio because of the sturdy platform. I
spent much time getting used to the Mavic pro platform honestly. I can say the
Skydio platform is well-organized compared to the Mavic 2 Pro.
In terms of the scanning, the scanning of Mavic 2 pro was simpler than
Skydio 2. We didn’t spend much time setting up for the scan with Mavic 2 pro.
All we had to do was select which type of mission and set the angle of the
camera, front overlap, side overlap, and drone speed. However, in terms of
scanning the Skydio 2 +, we spent much time to set up for the scanning. we set
boundaries, pillars, ar observer and visual geofence as well as basic settings
(overlaps and the angle of the camera). so we could feel even though it took
more time, we could get more specific and better results in skydio scanning.
